![]() ![]() Preparations were always intense, passionate, and almost spiritual. It was as old as the school’s rich history old boys and girls, the press and every other person in the catchment participated in the one-week fiesta. S&P was a competition everyone in and around my school looked up to. This would be the first victory of the Skirts over the Pants in that contest in three years. It was because of my blunder that the men lost in the final round of the quiz category when I answered a question that was intended for the women. This hatred went back to the previous year’s Skirts and Pants, an annual contest where every male creature in my school competed against every female folk: students, teachers, cooks, nurses etc. Edgar didn’t pick me to give a graduation speech because I was the best student of my junior secondary three class, but because he wanted to scorn me, even if it meant embarrassing the entire school before our parents and guests. But by night of that day, I was sure my rep had been dealt a big boost in preparation for my senior years in secondary school. ![]() The mere thought of standing on that brightly lit stage of my school’s auditorium, in front of parents I couldn't say what was on their minds, and in front of my mates who didn't like me, scared. And the only place to find those gifts is to look within yourself.I remember waking up that morning with an uneasy feeling. Our contribution to the world will not be measured by the money we make or the accolades we receive, but rather by how we share our unique gifts with the world. So be sure to make your choices when you are fully awake, decisions that are informed by your heart and not by what others say or think or believe. Up to this point in many of our lives, most things have been decided for us. Who looks outside, dreams who looks inside, awakes." So, today I remind you all to look into your hearts and be awake before you embark upon a dream that is not your own. Remember that it is YOUR LIFE.Ĭarl Jung said, "Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. For that reason, I urge you to make sure that you are on the ladder on which you genuinely WANT to be. We will keep climbing as if we are on an endless ladder to heights we've never achieved before. But thanks to everything we have learned so far, I am confident. Some of us will begin graduate school, once again on the bottom rung of the ladder. Today, we are graduating seniors, and this summer or fall, many of us will be starting at those entry-level jobs that will be the beginning of our careers. The next year we are thrown back to being the "low man on the totem pole" in our future school. Sometimes I think it is ironic that - in each endeavor in our academic lives - we learn and grow and achieve the highest level possible in that institution. Thanks, Mom and Dad!įellow graduates, today we have finished something. Without them, my graduation would not have been possible. ![]() Present in the audience, they encouraged me and supported me. On a personal note, being the first college graduate from my family, I would like to honor my parents. ![]() We have received an excellent education here, which makes it far more than a step between high school and the real world but rather a stepping stone to our futures. So, I thank every one of you who has made this university what it is and every one of you who have supported my fellow students and me along the way. I think that college students often take their college experience for granted, as just the step between high school and the real world.Īs the first member of my family to graduate from college, I do not take one bit of it for granted. President Wilson, Trustees, Faculty, family, friends, and fellow graduates, I am honored to speak to you on this very important day.įirst, I'd like to thank the administration and faculty of State University for their hard work and dedication on our behalf. ![]()
